Epson Joins Earth Hour 2024 In Support Of Global Environmental Action
Epson has been confirmed as the first-ever international corporate partner of Earth Hour. Known for its “lights off” moment, Earth Hour is a worldwide environmental movement that aims to raise awareness on nature loss and the climate crisis. By becoming the international corporate partner of Earth Hour 2024, which will be taking place this year at 8:30 PM local time on March 23 around the world, Epson aims to inspire millions of people to join the movement and take energy-saving action for the benefit of the planet.
Earth Hour was started by WWF (World Wide Fund for Nature) in 2007 as an event to show collective support for the planet through the symbolic action of people turning off their lights for an hour around the world at the end of March every year. Since then, it has grown to become the world’s largest grassroots environmental movement inspiring people in more than 190 countries and territories to take energy-saving actions. In 2023, Earth Hour achieved more than 410,000 hours pledged on its “Hour Bank,” an online counter of positive actions for our planet.
Jointly encouraging people to contribute to the global Hour Bank for Earth Hour 2024, Epson and Earth Hour have made simple energy-saving actions easily accessible on both Epson and Earth Hour websites, available in over 26 languages, throughout their respective countries and regions. To effect the change within corporate businesses as well, Epson is activating its global network of sales companies to help raise awareness of simple energy-saving actions.
Epson has committed to becoming carbon negative and eliminating the use of non-renewable underground resources in its Environmental Vision 2050. To these ends, the company is undertaking a series of initiatives, including transitioning to 100% renewable electricity at all Group sites worldwide[1] since the end of 2023. Epson is also dedicated to creating products and services that consume less electricity and reduce the environmental burden.
Epson global president Yasunori Ogawa said, "Epson is proud to be the first International Corporate Partner for Earth Hour. Since our founding, we have had a strong commitment to coexisting with the community and to ongoing activities aimed at preserving the natural environment. While fulfilling our mission as a company, we also believe in the importance of everyone joining to take action. Even small actions can make a big difference if enough people participate. Through this partnership, we hope to expand understanding and empathy for environmental activities and provide an opportunity for as many people as possible to act.”
“Guided by Epson’s renewed global aspirations, we have since put sustainability at the core of our business roadmap to achieve our own sustainability goals here in Southeast Asia. At Epson, this means sustainability must start from the basics such as reducing electricity usage. When we incorporate energy efficient practices throughout our processes, we can make a tangible industry impact. Our partnership with Earth Hour underscores our responsibility to leverage technology for societal good, benefiting livelihoods and protecting the environment,” shared Siew Jin Kiat, Regional Managing Director, Epson Southeast Asia.
“Our partnership with Epson exemplifies a collaborative approach when it comes to this year's Earth Hour,” says Yves Calmette, Senior Director, Brand and Network Communications, for Earth Hour International. “Together we can unleash the power of collective action - but we need everyone’s involvement to make it the Biggest Hour for Earth yet. We want Earth Hour to be a moment of celebration for our one shared home - our planet. Earth Hour isn’t just about acknowledging the problem, it's about celebrating the solutions. It is our beacon of hope, so that we can build a brighter, more sustainable future for all,” adds Calmette.
Epson and Earth Hour encourage everyone to take simple actions to save energy every day. Join us on 23 March, 8:30 PM to give an hour for Earth - saving energy, it’s just a simple switch!

Epson, WWF-Philippines call attention to the importance of collective action in addressing energy consumption
| Dino Calderon, Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) Program Manager at WWF-Philippines, leads the session on energy consumption and management |
Epson Philippines maintains a strong collaboration with World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) Philippines to tackle diverse environmental issues. Since the partnership began in 2022, Epson and WWF-Philippines have implemented numerous cooperative efforts aimed at preserving the nation's biodiversity, promoting the sustainable utilization of renewable natural resources, and minimizing pollution and excessive consumption. Their most recent project underscores the critical need for collective measures to manage the rising energy consumption rate in the Philippines through efficient energy management strategies.
Dino Calderon, Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) Program Manager at WWF-Philippines, reveals that the Philippines is facing a growing energy management problem, with the residential sector being one of the major contributors.
“Humans are the main drivers of change in terms of the biophysical aspects of this planet,” shared Calderon.
In the Philippines, the household sector consumes the largest amount of energy (35,324 GWh) according to the Department of Energy’s 2022 Annual Power Statistics, followed by the industrial sector (28,844 GWh) and the commercial sector (24,294 GWh).
“It may be a concerning statistic, but this also presents as an opportunity to make a change through a collective effort of individuals,” Calderon said.
WWF-Philippines and Epson are urging companies to initiate measures towards fostering an energy-efficient environment both at home and in the workplace–beginning on an individual level.
Putting this plan into motion, Epson arranged for WWF-Philippines to conduct an educational session for its employees. The session was designed to enlighten attendees about energy consumption, its environmental implications and to inspire them to initiate change. According to Calderon, these actions could be as straightforward as opting for public transportation instead of private vehicles or maximizing the use of natural light during the day.
"Epson values the power of individual actions and their collective impact," stated Masako Kusama, President and Director of Epson Philippines. "By teaching our employees how to manage their energy use effectively, we're building a culture of sustainability and doing our part in the global fight against pollution.”
Led by Calderon, the session highlighted the responsibility of companies like Epson to inform their employees about energy consumption and management, and translate this knowledge into practice.
"Companies hold a key position in tackling environmental challenges. By promoting awareness and fostering sustainable habits among employees, corporations like Epson can contribute to decreasing consumption and protecting our planet for the generations to come," explained Calderon. “What is crucial now is taking that first step through encouraging individual actions.”
Epson is optimistic that its collaboration with WWF-Philippines will enhance understanding of the environmental crisis and instill a sense of accountability among its employees. Through these discussions and continued collaboration with WWF-Philippines to create and implement programs, Epson strives to empower its employees to embrace sustainable habits and play their part in the worldwide mission to protect the environment.

Epson and WWF-Philippines underscore the role corporations play in addressing plastic pollution and waste management
Epson Philippines continues to work closely with World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) Philippines to address various environmental challenges. The partnership, which began in 2022, has led to several joint initiatives focusing on conserving the country's biodiversity, ensuring the sustainable use of renewable natural resources, and reducing pollution and wasteful consumption. The latest joint undertaking highlights the urgent need for collective action in addressing the pressing environmental challenges of plastic pollution and waste management.
Dino Calderon, Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) Program Manager at WWF-Philippines, shares that the Philippines is grappling with a severe waste management crisis, with plastic pollution being one of the most significant contributors.
“As a nation surrounded by oceans, the country is ranked as the third-largest source of ocean plastic pollution globally, generating 2.7 million metric tons of plastic waste annually, according to a 2015 study by Ocean Conservancy,” said Calderon. “This situation not only affects marine life but also poses serious threats to human health and the overall ecosystem.”
WWF-Philippines and Epson encourage companies to take steps towards creating a greener workplace culture.
To put this plan into action, Epson invited WWF-Philippines to host a learning session for its employees, focusing on the current state of pollution and waste management in the Philippines, its impact on the environment, and the steps that organizations and individuals can take to mitigate these issues. The event aimed to educate the company's workforce on the pressing environmental challenges faced by the Philippines and empower them to take action, starting from an individual level.
"Epson recognizes the importance of individual actions and how these make a collective impact on society," said Masako Kusama, President at Epson Philippines. "By educating our employees about pollution and waste management, we aim to foster a culture of sustainability within our organization and contribute to the global effort to combat pollution and preserve the environment."
Facilitated by Calderon, the discussion emphasized the need for corporations like Epson to educate their employees on plastic pollution and waste management and put learnings into action.
"Corporations play a crucial role in addressing environmental issues. By raising awareness and encouraging employees to adopt sustainable practices, companies like Epson can make a significant impact on reducing pollution and preserving our planet for future generations," explained Calderon.
Epson believes that its partnership with WWF-Philippines will help boost awareness on the environmental crisis and foster a sense of responsibility among its employees. By hosting this talk and continuing to work with WWF-Philippines to develop programs, Epson aims to inspire its workforce to adopt sustainable practices and contribute to the global effort to preserve the environment.
