Prime Video has released the official trailer for The Love Hypothesis, the highly anticipated romantic comedy based on Ali Hazelwood's New York Times bestselling novel. Starring Lili Reinhart and Tom Bateman, the film takes the popular fake-dating trope into the world of academia, where an impulsive kiss between a Ph.D. candidate and her intimidating professor leads to an arrangement neither of them expects to become complicated.

From Fake Relationship to Something Real

The story follows Olive, a brilliant Ph.D. candidate focused on building her future in academia. When she realizes her best friend Ahn has fallen for her former crush Jeremy, Olive impulsively kisses Professor Adam Carlsen to prove that she has already moved on.

There's just one problem: Adam is intimidating, respected, and not exactly the type of person Olive would expect to become her fake boyfriend.

What starts as a convenient arrangement quickly develops into a relationship with its own rules, boundaries, and mutual benefits. But as Olive and Adam spend more time together, the carefully constructed boundaries between pretending and reality begin to become harder to maintain.

A Romance Built on a Complicated Hypothesis

For fans of romantic comedies, The Love Hypothesis has plenty of familiar ingredients: opposites attracting, workplace tension, fake dating, and two people discovering that their carefully planned arrangement may be turning into something neither expected.

At the center of it all is Olive's biggest dilemma. She's confident when it comes to her academic ambitions, but navigating her growing feelings for Adam presents an entirely different challenge.

The film's central question is simple: what happens when a relationship that was supposed to be fake starts feeling real?

Lili Reinhart and Tom Bateman Lead the Cast

Lili Reinhart stars as Olive, bringing the ambitious Ph.D. candidate to the screen, while Tom Bateman plays Adam Carlsen, the intimidating professor who unexpectedly becomes her partner in the fake relationship.

The cast also includes Rachel Marsh as Ahn, Nicholas Duvernay as Jeremy, Jaboukie Young-White, and Arty Froushan.

Behind the camera, Claire Scanlon directs from a screenplay by Sarah Rothschild, with the story adapted from Hazelwood's bestselling novel. Elizabeth Cantillon serves as producer.

Why Romance Fans Should Watch

The appeal of The Love Hypothesis goes beyond its fake-dating setup. The story combines academic ambition, friendship, career pressure, and romance, giving Olive and Adam plenty of reasons to keep their relationship complicated.

For readers who loved Hazelwood's novel, the adaptation offers the chance to see the characters and romantic tension brought to life. For viewers discovering the story for the first time, the trailer promises an easy-to-watch romantic comedy built around chemistry, awkward situations, and the classic question of whether pretending to fall in love can actually lead to the real thing.

Mark Your Calendar

The Love Hypothesis will be available to stream on Prime Video on September 23, 2026, in the Philippines and across more than 240 countries and territories worldwide.
