As the Philippines and the United Kingdom mark 80 years of diplomatic ties, British Council is launching a campaign that goes beyond history and looks at how collaboration in education, arts, English, and innovation continues to create real opportunities for Filipinos today. From creative industries to international learning pathways, the initiative highlights how global partnerships are quietly shaping the future of skills, culture, and regional cooperation.

The British Council launches its ‘Currents of Connection’ campaign, highlighting the longstanding collaboration between the United Kingdom and the Philippines and their continued impact across the English, education and arts pillars.

Currents of Connection comes at a significant moment for UK–Philippines relations, coinciding with the 80th anniversary of diplomatic ties between the two countries and the Philippines’ ASEAN Chairship. These milestones present an opportunity to reflect on how partnerships have developed and where they are headed. The campaign brings these efforts into clearer focus, positioning collaboration as a continuing priority across both bilateral and regional contexts.

This focus is reflected in recent and ongoing collaborations that demonstrate how UK–Philippines partnerships are put into practice. These include the ASEAN‑UK Creative Economy Symposium with the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), and the National Capacity‑Building and Consultation Workshop on Technology Readiness and Valuation with the Department of Science and Technology (DOST). Together, these initiatives highlight the British Council’s contribution to strengthening the Philippines’ innovation ecosystems through close collaboration with key actors and institutions.

Building on this momentum, the British Council will continue its work throughout 2026 with partners including the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) and British Embassy Manila, among others.

The British Council works across arts, education and English, and has partnered with institutions in the Philippines for decades to support education and cultural exchange. Through collaboration with government agencies, higher education institutions and the creative sector, the organisation supports programme development, knowledge exchange and international study opportunities.

This work also includes the British Council’s role in English language assessment through the delivery of IELTS and Aptis. Together, these areas of engagement reflect the contribution of education, skills and culture in strengthening UK–Philippines cooperation at both bilateral and regional levels.

“UK–Philippines relations are not defined by history alone, but by collaboration that continues to create real opportunities for both countries,” said Lotus Postrado, Country Director of the British Council in the Philippines. “As we mark 80 years of partnership, our focus is firmly on what comes next — working together across education, the arts and English to support skills development, innovation and deeper regional cooperation.”

By bringing these efforts into focus, the campaign offers a clearer view of the breadth of UK–Philippines collaboration and how sustained engagement continues to create opportunities for learning, exchange and shared progress.

The ‘Currents of Connection’ campaign will be implemented across multiple platforms throughout the year, showcasing partnerships and initiatives that reflect the scope of UK–Philippines cooperation aand shared goals.

Through its ongoing work across education, arts and culture, and skills development, including support for education pathways such as IELTS, the British Council continues to connect individuals to opportunities that extend beyond borders, contributing to stronger links between the Philippines, the UK, and the wider region.
