The UP Chapel in Diliman now welcomes visitors with refreshed and more serene surroundings, just in time for Simbang Gabi and its 70th anniversary. Completed by DMCI Homes, the landscaping enhancement highlights the chapel’s iconic architecture while creating a more inviting space for students, alumni, and visitors to pause, reflect, and appreciate one of the country’s most important cultural landmarks.

Visitors to the Church of the Holy Sacrifice at UP Diliman, Quezon City will now be welcomed by refreshed and thoughtfully enhanced surroundings following the completion of a landscaping improvement project by DMCI Homes.

The project was finished in time for this year’s Simbang Gabi season and ahead of the chapel’s 70th anniversary on December 20, 2025, making the upgrade especially meaningful for the wider UP Diliman community.

Popularly known as the UP Chapel, the historic structure was designed by National Artist for Architecture Leandro Locsin, with structural engineering by Engr. Alfredo L. Juinio, former dean of the UP College of Engineering. It is also one of the iconic landmarks built by DMCI Group founder Engr. David M. Consunji.

The enhancement project was led by DMCI Homes’ award-winning in-house Concepts and Landscape Management team and included landscaping upgrades, grassing, and clearing across the chapel grounds. Work began in May 2024 with the goal of highlighting the chapel’s timeless design while creating a warm, serene outdoor setting for worshippers, students, alumni, and visitors.

As part of the initiative, the Concepts and Landscape Management team worked closely with the chapel’s own landscaping staff to help ensure the grounds remain well maintained long after the project’s completion.

According to Landscape Architect Alexis Valiente, AVP of DMCI Homes Concepts and Landscape Management, the team approached the project with deep respect for the chapel’s heritage and its role in the cultural and spiritual life of the UP Diliman community.

“The UP Chapel holds deep significance for the UP Diliman community. Being able to contribute to its enhancement and preservation is both a privilege and a heartfelt responsibility for our team. We hope that the refreshed surroundings offer a setting that uplifts everyone who visits,” Valiente said.

The landscaping enhancement continues DMCI Homes’ longstanding support for the upkeep of the UP Chapel. In 2021, the company and its partners—JBLS Trading & Construction Aesthetics and Boysen Philippines—completed a major renovation that strengthened the structure and helped safeguard its historical and cultural significance for generations of students, alumni, and visitors.

Beyond its role as a place of worship, the UP Chapel is widely recognized as a landmark in Philippine architecture. It is the country’s first circular chapel and the first to feature a thin-shell concrete dome engineered by Engr. Juinio.

It is also the only structure in the Philippines that brings together the works of five National Artists: Leandro Locsin for Architecture, Napoleon Abueva for Sculpture, Arturo Luz for Visual Arts, Vicente Manansala for Painting, and Ang Kiukok for Visual Arts.

As the chapel marks seven decades of faith, artistry, and history, DMCI Homes hopes that the enhanced surroundings will provide a more peaceful and enriching experience for all who visit the UP Diliman campus, especially during the holiday season and beyond.
