De Ocampo began his career as a seafarer in 2009 and was trained as a Pastry Chef aboard cruise ships. This was followed by a chance to train under the esteemed Jean-Philippe Maury’s chocolate shop, honing Isagani’s skills under the guidance of masters.
But fate had different plans for the chocolatier. When the pandemic hit in 2020, Isagani belonged to the first batch of repatriated overseas Filipino workers. It was also this time when he started creating his own chocolate formula, dreaming of launching his own chocolate line in the Philippines.
“It was hard at first because our taste for chocolate is quite different. Filipinos prefer the “stateside” chocolate. So, I thought of making a local version of chocolate that tastes like it’s imported,” he shared. “I wanted to bring the technology and the taste that I learned from abroad closer to chocolate lovers here,” he added.
But starting the business in a pandemic was not easy. For one, he had to rent a separate place for his chocolate factory – which was not possible during the lockdown. De Ocampo had to put his business on hold for a year before he was able to launch his first product in November of 2021.

“It became a hit, and the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) heard about it. They approached me and offered me help. I held my first bazaar with them in January of the next year and I introduced my product as a local ‘imported’ chocolate. And the rest is history,” he recalled.
To scale his business even further, Isagani saw the value of upskilling and learning how to employ digital tools to boost micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSME) like Kakaw Galleon. When the invitation to attend the eBizNovation program under the livelihood advocacy of PLDT and Smart Communications, Inc. (Smart) came, he did not hesitate to join.
“I’m a non-tech savvy person. Technology and I don’t get along. But I saw the invite to the eBizNovation workshop of DTI and PLDT and Smart, so I attended the event. Then, when I returned home, I told my wife about it, and she volunteered to implement it,” de Ocampo said.
The eBizNovation program is a digital upskilling-to-ecommerce program that aims to provide local entrepreneurs, cooperatives, and MSMEs like Kakaw Galleon the right digital tools to help them grow their businesses online.
Together with government partners such as the DTI, LGUs, local chambers of commerce, and ecommerce platforms like TikTok Shop, eBizNovation trains local business owners like Isagani how to maximize digital commerce to boost their livelihood.
“The skills and knowledge we gained from PLDT and Smart’s eBizNovation training have helped us build our digital platforms and online payment system, and ultimately helped boost our online presence and sales. We are thankful for this opportunity,” the chocolatier shared.

Anatomy of a Fall uses French, English, and German languages. Past Lives features both English and Korean. Meanwhile, German is predominantly spoken throughout The Zone of Interest.
Martin Scorsese became the most Oscar-nominated living director this year after he secured his 10th nod for the western crime drama Killers of the Flower Moon. He is behind the late William Wyler, who holds the record with 12 nominations.

“Hosting this year’s MAD Meet in Davao marks one of our organization’s greatest achievements, as it breaks away from our traditional Luzon-based gatherings since the inception of the annual reunion of volunteers,” said Big Jay Lagang, MAD Meet Davao convenor and Chief of Volunteers for Countryside Operations of I am MAD.
Under its new banner, “Love the Volunteer Vibes: I am MAD to the 14th Power,” the organization hopes to express an amplified level of positivity and enthusiasm associated with engaging in volunteer work.
Furthermore, the latest theme is also in support of the country’s “Love the Philippines” campaign as it has been a trademark of I am MAD to visit local tourist spots after each outreach program. This year, I am MAD is set to conduct its flagship program MAD Camp in at least 12 schools across different provinces and explore seven tourist destinations for its MADventure initiative.
Lagang, a dedicated member of I am MAD for nearly a decade and presently serving as a news anchor/reporter at People's Television Network (PTV) Davao, expresses hope that both existing members and newcomers will wholeheartedly embrace and embody the spirit of “Love the Volunteer Vibes” that this kind of event fosters.
Meanwhile, aside from unveiling its latest campaign and plans for 2024, the two-day reunion also highlighted the organization’s accomplishments in 2023, including its 11 MAD Camps around the Philippines, MAD Talks Padayon—a volunteerism and mental health forum, MADx—an employee engagement program for corporate partners, and its newest social enterprise—MADventure, among others.
Through these accomplishments that reflect the organization’s commitment to helping and inspiring young people to be a part of nation-building, I am MAD was likewise recognized by the Department of Education as one of its “MATATAG” Agenda partners.
Filled by the serene ambiance of bamboo-inspired architecture seamlessly blending with the lush surroundings at Bamboo Sanctuary and Ecological Park, the evening culminated with volunteers radiantly adorned in earth tone outfits during “Star MADgic Night: Gawad I am MAD.” This event celebrated and honored the dedicated volunteers who contributed to the successful conduct of I am MAD programs, initiatives, and engagements throughout 2023.

Recognized by the Ten Accomplished Youth Organizations (TAYO) Awards Foundation, MAD Camp is the organization’s flagship outreach program that spans three days. Volunteers gather to facilitate values formation activities aligned with the Department of Education’s core advocacies and to engage school children aged 10-12 in tasks aimed at promoting positive Filipino traits.The group typically stays at the beneficiary school for the duration of the camp, with the final day reserved for local community immersion and exploration.
Every MAD Camp is supported by a fundraiser called BIDA Eskwela (Bigay Ayuda para sa Eskwela) in which funds collected will be used to provide each student-participant a “Bag of Dreams” with school supplies and other tokens. This year, the organization is pushing for the “Piso mula sa Puso para sa Pangarap ko” theme that aims to secure donations for as little as one peso. Trend Micro Incorporated (TYO: 4704; TSE: 4704), a global cybersecurity leader, today revealed its critical role in helping global law enforcement partners disrupt mega-ransomware group LockBit, and kill the viability of its long-term malware plans. Through undercover infiltration, Trend helped prevent the release of the group’s next malware products and automatically installed protection for Trend Micro customers, even before the group themselves had finished testing.

Robert McArdle, a leader in Trend Micro’s cybercrime research team and collaborator with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and National Crime Agency (NCA), said: “We are honored that our threat intelligence is uniquely valuable to global law enforcement in the shared mission to make the world safer.”
This group was responsible for about 25 percent* of all ransomware leaks in 2023 and caused billions of dollars in losses for thousands of global victims over the past four years. Due to the potential damage that this group can cause, the Philippine National Police (PNP) last year warned Filipinos about LockBit and recommended several cyber hygiene practices to avoid becoming a victim to the group.
McArdle continued, “Last week Trend secured global Microsoft users from a critical vulnerability and this week we were a part of dethroning the most critical threat actor group in the world. Now, insiders aren’t naïve enough to assume this will eliminate the crime group, but we know that no sane criminal would want to be involved with this group again.”
Details from behind the scenes are unfolding and include cryptocurrency seizure, arrests, indictments, imposing sanctions and additional technical support for victims. The operation took over LockBit’s leak site, disclosing information and personal identities of group members and details of their previous works. These actions essentially make the group unwelcome and untrusted in the cybercrime world—and therefore unviable as an underground business.
Ransomware is one of the most serious cyber threats facing organizations today, known for disrupting schools, hospitals, governments, and businesses and imperiling critical national infrastructure. It does all of this while lining the pockets of a few small cybercrime groups: last year, victims paid over $1 billion to these groups and their affiliates, a record figure.

While LockBit was, without doubt, the largest and most impactful Ransomware operation globally, this disruption makes it very clear that all criminal affiliates should strongly reconsider any involvement with them in the future and that in partnering with this organization, these associates have put themselves at increased risk of law enforcement action.

According to Immigration data from South Korea's Ministry of Justice, the foreign resident population, encompassing both short-term and long-term stays, stood at 2.25 million in 2022, up by 14.8% from the previous year. Among these, the Philippines ranked 6th, accounting for roughly 60,000 individuals. Furthermore, there has been a significant surge in Filipino tourists visiting South Korea, rising from 116,000 in 2021 to 308,000 in November 2023, or a substantial increase of 165.5%.
In response to increasing interactions between South Korea and the Philippines, the two companies plan to broaden their remittance services in the future. This expansion will facilitate the flow of funds from Korea to the Philippines and vice versa, accommodating various financial demands, including tourist payments and hospital fees in Korea.
